Minister praises the expertise of Finnish migration administration

Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen, who is responsible for migration affairs, cites clearing the backlog of asylum and family reunification applications as the greatest challenge during the current term of government. At the moment, Finland exceeds the nine-month time limit for processing family reunification applications laid down in EU legislation. However, the Minister praises the expertise of the Finnish migration administration and believes that the targets can be reached.

Finland is not yet ready to let Bulgaria and Romania join the Schengen area. Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen stresses Finland's requirement that the Commission's progress report under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) to be published in February 2012 must first state that Bulgaria and Romania have made concrete and sufficient progress in fulfilling the commitments made to combat corruption and reform the judicial system before the decision can be made to lift internal border checks.
